So I love Steven Universe for countless reasons that I can go on about for hours so don’t even ask me about all of them. One of the big reasons I really love about Steven Universe is the art. When people talk about the art they point straight to the backgrounds when there also other areas in the show you can look at.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like love the backgrounds that Rebecca Sugar creates. They really capture the mood and it’s always a beautiful blend of cool colors. But this is also something I think you can point to, the way she draws emotions. It’s about a 5 minute scene and most of the time Pearl, the character depicted above, is in the background but each shot is the same emotion but expressed differently. Her face is never just a simple frown but the creators of Steven Universe incorporate mouth, eyes, wrinkles, eyebrows, body, and the angle at which the person is “shot” at.
The expression in all these photos is sadness but it’s all a different type of sadness. sadness and fear, pure sadness, sadness and despair, trying to hide the sadness, sadness and worry, sadness and shame, so on and so on. Again this is just a five minute scene and it just really goes to show you how much time the creators put into the show. I wish the episodes were longer but I can understand that the amount of work they put into each episode that they release weekly is already extraordinary and it’s not something anyone can hold against them.
